Barclays cards customer support *sucks*

May 28th, 2008

I applied twice for a barclays credit card, and both the times they misplaced (or was that *misused*) my application. Unfortunately, the only way to contact them is through email, and the reply that you get is a _standard templated_ which gets populated with your information ;)

Ok, enough blabbering. I guess, the text below says it all (Please read the ‘read this first’ part first and then the ‘read this next’ part to get the most of the post :d ):-

********************************************************************** If
your system can’t trace the application from the ‘reference no.’ that you
yourself send as an sms to the customer, why in the lord’s name do you send
it in the first place? I sincerely am unable to understand how your system
works… After 2 such responses, common sense tells me that you are good at
_losing_ valuable customer data and am no longer interested in availing your
cards, or any other service provided by you. I just want you to send me a
confirmation that no credit card has been issued from your bank in my name
(this is to ensure that the forms that i submitted and for which you sent me
reference nos. on my mobile phone have *NOT* been misused). Thanks for all
the help! regards, Pradnyesh Sawant! ps:- Noticed just now that both the
above mails are exactly the same (including the 2 full-stops after the word
‘application’ (in the 3rd last line)). Do you use the same template to reply
to every single mail? I wonder if these replies are auto-generated and sent
out; no human touch whatsoever :(

Awesome theme

May 22nd, 2008

I tried this wordpress theme:- http://themes.wordpress.net/testrun/?wptheme=929. And this is how my page looks like in it:-

However, there are a few things that bother:-

  • Very small font; which can be easily fixed by modifying the css
  • All messages are in a non-english language; makes reading the page difficult to read for me ;)
  • Only 2 posts in the home page. It is easy to click the links to one of the post at the bottom half of the page and go to a particular link.
  • But then again, the page containing only one post has all links in some language that I do not understand :(

Feels bad to forgo such an awesome theme…

Site works again

May 10th, 2008

Searching on Yahoo! for ‘limitinternalrecursion’ lead me to a solution to check my ~/public_html/.htaccess. I simply renamed the file, and now my site is working. I need to check how the file got screwed in the first place, and the ideal contents that it should have :)

Anyways, I’m feeling very relieved that my site is back in the game now!

Struggling with a site not working

May 10th, 2008

My server is right now giving a ‘500 Internal Server Error’ :(

Funnily enough I can login to my blog; it greets me with a blank page though. I can, however, go in my location bar drop down and come to the wordpress dashboard where I can enter a new post (as I am doing right now :D ).

Going through the main error logs on the cPanel showed that the logs are almost useless because they are for the whole of the hostmonster server, and it is not possible to get logs pertaining to my domain from the measly 5 lines that they provide :( (.

My first reaction was to go through the blog error logs, and I found a lot of ’sql errors’. I thought that this was because of the theme change that I had done a few days ago.  However, the error msg had been coming from almost the day that I had installed the blog; so it should have nothing to do with the theme change that I did.

So right now I am clueless as to why am I getting the ‘Internal Error’; will try to get some help — that’s what you gotta do when you’re no longer able to proceed :)

Changed the theme

May 7th, 2008

One of my colleagues is a security guy and he suggested that I remove the “login” link from my blog home page. I initially thought that it would be a configuration parameter somewhere and searched for the same. I could add/remove modules from the blog; however, that messed up the default look and feel of the theme. So instead, I chose the path to try and change the css and php itself. I, initially thought it to be difficult, but it wasn’t so. All i needed to do was to change the “sidebar.php” and remove the section containg “Meta”. I also changed the “header.php” and removed the header, coz it wasn’t looking good with just one “home” tab.

It feels nice when you start doing something, and it works out fine :)

vimperator

May 7th, 2008

I am a huge fan of vim and today I tried out the vimperator plugin for firefox. Although I’ve started using it just a few hrs back, and that for not so much time, I’ve started to like it. I hope to put up a review for the same in the not so far future ;) Basically, I’m trying to figure out things that’ll help me blog more :D .

Anyways, to give a first impression, here are a few points:-

  • Took some time to get the location bar to appear (need that coz the dropdown is helpful, and you don’t get that in the :o pen / :tabopen)
    • The search-bar is helpful too ;)
  • The help is _extensive_ and is easily reachable through :h
  • The best thing is that a lot of it is customizable and the settings can be made to persist using a rc file (so much like vim itself)
    • So, one just puts “set guioptions+=mT” in the rc file and solves the location bar problem mentioned above
  • The thing that I do not like is that a <ctrl-n> takes to the next tab, so starting a new instance is not possible. Furthermore if one does start a new instance from the menu, a ZZ closes off all the existing instances (A <alt-f4> works fine though).

Will write more things after working with it a little more. Hope this helps in the mean time :)

Last weekend was awesome (or was it?)

May 6th, 2008

Last weekend was a long holiday, and I took the opportunity to go home. The first thing I did on reaching home was give a quick visit to my family doc; showed her my annual physical test reports and took her opinion. Then in the evening I met my best friends and drank cold coffee w/ them (that was surely the best cold coffee I’ve ever had; although it came from a very common place — ‘udupi cafe’ @ chembur station).

Anyways, the next day was spent quarreling w/ my fiance. We spent the day out together, went to our favorite hotel but had only a ‘mysore sada dosa’ each :( . Then we went to siddhivinayak temple, but I was so mad that I didn’t even go inside. But by the time we reached back home we had reconciled :D .

Sat afternoon was again spent w/ my fiance. In the evening I went to balaji temple w/ my fiance and her mom. Gave them gifts that I had brought from my last trip to hong kong.

It was sunday already and time for me to pack my bags and begin my return journey. Called up juee and ahte to meet me @ vashi, but neither of them turned up :( . Anyways, my cousin came and was happy to meet me. She also liked the gifts that I had brought for her and her twin from hong kong.

The return journey was uneventful, but I couldn’t get a decent sleep. Saw ‘ek chalis ki last local’ and ‘nanhe jaisalmer’ in the evening. The first one is a decent one time watch. The second one, however, is not too good. However, there is one scene (where nanhe gets ‘gadha’ written on his camel and himself) that one should definitely show to his/her toddlers to make sure that the nail is hit hard :)

Spy killed by his own men :p

April 21st, 2008

Yesterday’s match between bangalore ‘royal challengers’ and ‘mumbai indians’ (http://content-ind.cricinfo.com/ipl/engine/current/match/335985.html) was a treat to watch, essentially because it got pulled to almost the last over. According to me, the turning point was when bhajji not only gave away 2 sixes in one of his overs, but also took dravid’s wicket in the same over. I mean, c’mon, dravid was making sure that the mumbai indians win ;) . And in such a scenario, only bhajji would be dumb enough to take his wicket and also rejoice it. It was a simple case of planting a spy in the opposite camp and then going ahead and killing him oneself.

Happy Birthday to my dearest brother!
